“Fantastic Beasts: Dumbledore’s Secrets”, new feature in the franchise, frustrates by not advancing in the story
It’s been more than three years since “Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald” was released in theaters at the end of 2018. From there until the release of ” Fantastic Beasts: Dumbledore’s Secrets ” on March 14th, many waters rolled: Johnny Depp was fired and replaced by Mads Mikkelsen as the villain Gherard Grindelwald ; JK Rowling fought for her right to hate trans people ; and production was delayed a few times, because of the coronavirus pandemic, but also so the script could be rewritten, this time with the help of Steve Kloves ., responsible for seven of the eight adaptations of the “Harry Potter” books.
During this period, fans waited with parsimony, even with the scarcity of news about the film. And, now, those same fans are “rewarded” with a movie even worse than its predecessor, which doesn’t deliver anything new to the magical world we already know and ends with the feeling that we’ve waited for almost four years to advance the story, but we’re right back where we left off in “The Crimes of Grindelwald”.
In ” Fantastic Beasts: Dumbledore’s Secrets “, Grindelwald continues with his plan to start a war against Muggles so that wizards will no longer have to hide or suffer the consequences of revealing themselves in a world that could turn against him. . Gathering a growing following around the world, the wizard wants even more and plans to infiltrate an election to determine who will be the next wizarding world leader – since, until this film, not even the most die-hard “Harry Potter” fans “Perhaps they knew it existed. He’s like a Minister for Magic, only from all over the world. Sounds important, doesn’t it? Yeah, but you’ll only see the subject being explored for the first time now.
To stop Grindelwald from achieving his goals, Albus Dumbledore ( Jude Law ) assembles a peculiar team of franchise stars to deal with the threat. At the same time, the professor still has to deal with Credence Barebone / Aurelius Dumbledore ( Ezra Miller), who continues his relentless quest to find out, this time, why he was rejected by his family and ended up in the clutches of his terrible adoptive mother. And the revelation… Well, it’s fair to say that it respects the film’s purpose of being extremely frustrating and irrelevant to the future of the franchise, happening in the most “casual” way possible. Yes, the great mystery left by the last film, almost four years ago, is solved anyway, as in a conversation thrown away.
Oh, and not to mention the so-called “Dumbledore’s Secrets”, which fill the title. If you believed you would discover new truths about the powerful wizard’s past, you’d better lower your expectations. The truth is that everything is just a compilation that fans have seen in the movies and / or read in the “Harry Potter” books. Maybe it’s news for the most unsuspecting viewer, who just watches the franchise movies without delving into the story, but… Was Dumbledore gay and in love with Grindelwald ? Shocking! This one caught me off guard!
“Dumbledore’s Secret” has its moments, both for fans and the general public. But if you look through those layers, which are just there to justify how poor the story is, you realize that the film barely advances the story, leaving the viewer not only frustrated, but disgusted. Or, at least, that’s what should happen. When you’re done, it feels like you’ve just wasted two and a half hours with absolutely nothing. Is it a funny movie? And yes. Do you have exciting moments? Some. Is it worth spending time and money? I would say no, but the choice is still yours.
The initial plan, of making just three films, was certainly the best option for the development of “Fantastic Beasts” and the confrontation between Dumbledore and Grindelwald – which, it’s worth remembering, everyone already knows the ending, if you’ve watched “Harry Potter” . Even better, it would have been a lot nicer if it had just stayed in a movie about Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, which had its potential to be a safe and fun spin-off .
However, the reality of a five-film franchise, written by a book author, used to having pages and pages to develop her plots, but who doesn’t know how to condense it into a few hours of screen, may have been a bad idea. “Dumbledore’s Secret” is a movie that should cause fans to revolt to the point where they knock on the door of Warner Studios to demand a movie that respects their devotion to the franchise.
But the truth is that this will not happen and, for the second time, fans will swallow the crumbs of this third “Fantastic Beasts”, relying on nostalgia and the lack of having one of the most remarkable stories in pop culture. Who loses? All of us.
